Oscar Wilde

When homosexuality is a crime.

Oscar Wilde (October 16, 1854 – November 30, 1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and short story writer. He was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. As the result of a famous trial, he was imprisoned at two years of hard labour after being convicted of the offence of "gross indecency", which included homosexual acts.

1.Read Wilde's biography.

2.Read "The Selfish Giant". Do you think the tale is influenced by homosexuality?

3. Did you know that Spanish law also punished homosexuality not so long ago? Watch the video on Lorca and write a brief summary about the reasons that led to his death.

4. The countries of the world have a wide variety of laws relating to sexual relations between people of the same sex. Observe the list of countries that have laws against homosexuality. Are they rich or poor countries? Are poor countries more conservative? In some countries only male homosexuality is punished. In your opinion, is there any reason for this? Write some conclusions that you can get from the list.
