Solving Unit Rates
  Real-life Examples

Answer the following questions and problems on solving unit rates. Use the website below as a guide.

1) Define in your own words what a unit rate is.

2) Think of three examples in your life in which you would find a unit rate.

Now it is time to give you practice with unit rates. You will be working with a partner. For the next activity, your partner and you will see how many times you can both snap your fingers in one minute. Then you will both see how many jumping jacks you can complete in one minute. After you have both completed the activities, you will work with the data to solve problems involving rates. Each partner needs to take turns performing the exercises. While one partner is performing the exercises, the other partner must time and count.

3) ____________ = number of snaps in one minute

 Write this as a unit rate. Remember to label everything.

 Now, determine how many snaps you can do in one second? Round to the nearest hundredth if necessary. Label your answer.

 At this rate, how many snaps could you do in one hour? Label your answer.

 How many snaps could you do in a half hour? Round to the nearest hundredth if necessary Label your answer.

4) __________ = number of jumping jacks
