Music was very important to Billie Jo Kelby, the main character in Out of the Dust. Her mother taught her to play the piano and instilled in her the love of music. Billie Jo enjoyed listening to her mother play the piano and playing ragtime music on the piano herself. She was so talented that she was asked to play professionally. Included on this page are links to Woody Guthrie, the author and singer of many songs about the Dust Bowl and its victims, as well as links to sites about Scott Joplin, "the king of ragtime".
